ABOUT TRIPOLI DESIGNS Print E-mail

The fine furniture and design objects of Tripoli reflect the sinewy and harmonious forms found in nature, chiefly in
the ocean. Tyrome Tripoli’s diverse interests and experiences contribute to a structural aesthetic that is coherent but
draws on many sources.

Before he turned to furniture making, Tripoli had a background in art including painting and lost wax jewelry making.
The three dimensional jewelry motifs were then successfully translated into larger-scale furniture pieces. These media
have a common feature in the use of negative space in their constructions. The interplay of cursive shapes and gaps
create a flow and tension that define the Tripoli style.

With a degree in molecular Biology from the University of California in San Diego, Tripoli has an awareness of the
interlocking configurations of the natural world.  The experience also allows Tripoli to conceptualize the designs of his
pieces before executing them.  But perhaps the central inspiration in his artful furniture is that of the ocean.  Having
grown up in Corona del Mar, California, Tripoli was involved in surfing the waves at an early age.  The sublime power
and movement of the ocean are metaphorically recreated in the Tripoli collection.

In assessing the motivation behind his work, Tripoli regards them as primarily art pieces that are almost incidentally
functional.  “Using steel to recapture the motion and flow of the ocean is my goal; your eyes trace the form without
resistance,” he explains.  Tripoli’s use of natural materials, like hardwoods, stone and blown glass, are integrated into
the design so that they enhance the fluid, hand bent metalwork. Although Tripoli has a distinct style, he considers
many factors when designing a piece; for example, the characteristics of the space, the availability of resources and
foremost the client’s needs. Tripoli prides himself on making a piece that is better than the client’s expectations. In
business since 1992, Tripoli’s best sales tactics are personal referrals.
